Phoenix is the most populous city in the entire state of Arizona. It is also the capital city of the state. Because of its long history and dozens of culture and entertainment centers, it has attracted millions of people to its borders. It had 1,615,017 residents, according to the 2016 report, making it the fifth most populous city in the entire United States. Its metropolitan statistical area is known as the Valley of the Sun.

The area where Phoenix now stands was once occupied by an ancient group of indigenous people who lived around the greater Arizona and Mexico regions. They were well-known for their irrigation system. In fact, they made over 135 miles of canals, which were later used by different canal companies and aqueducts in Arizona.

Another local tribe was a major player in the area. They grew crops like corn, beans, and squash, as well as cotton and tobacco. This group traded with other Mesoamerican tribes, further spreading the industry of growing cotton and tobacco.

Phoenix is home to a historic adobe house that was built 1870. This mud brick house is considered the oldest residential structure in the city. It is currently closed to the public, but it was once used as a museum. The new town of Phoenix was officially recognized in 1868 and a post office was established later in June of that year.

A zoo in Phoenix has 12,000 animals and hosts several wildlife seminars and demonstrations throughout the year. The highest peak in all of Phoenix is over 2,704 feet high and, although the top can only be accessed through a very steep 1.2-mile-long summit trail, many mountain climbers consider the view incomparable.

There is a desert botanical garden on North Galvin Parkway and it takes up over 50 acres of land in a community park. The botanical garden has thousands of flora species, from exotic and foreign to those indigenous to the area.

While the garden offers a view of the area's most beautiful and historic flora, a certain museum on North Avenue provides visitors a chance to learn about the various cultures of ancient indigenous tribes. It is considered one of the best museums of its kind. It has collections of crafts made by different local tribes that have existed in the past and by those living currently in Arizona.

Phoenix covers 517.9 square miles of land and water and is considered the largest city in the entire state, just after Tucson, in terms of area. The Phoenix metropolitan area was the 14th largest one in the entire country. While it was settled in 1867, it was only incorporated a few decades later in 1881. Many of the residents work in administrative support, sales, food preparation and serving, transportation, and management.

During the 2016 survey, Phoenix was home to four large companies that involved different industries like computers, mining, retail, and aerospace. There are 33 school districts serving the students of Phoenix, Arizona. Because of the city's size, there are more than 200 elementary schools, 31 high schools, and around 17 colleges and universities in Phoenix.
