Avondale, AZ Tidbits
The city of Avondale is a bedroom suburb for people working in nearby cities. During the 2010 census, it had 76,238 residents. Avondale used to be a small community where only cotton and alfalfa were grown, but it has since become a major center for residential subdivisions, shopping centers, recreational parks, and many more.
In the 1860s, several American pioneers arrived in Arizona. In 1880, a new settlement was established and it was called "Coldwater" after the river nearby. From the late 19th century to the early 1900s, the town saw the construction of only a few structures like the general store, a stagecoach stop, and a post office, which was later moved to a nearby area called Avondale Ranch.
The postal office later bore the name "Avondale". This prompted the residents to replace the town's name. The Coldwater station for stagecoaches was the center of the town. During the latest decade, the city of Avondale saw an increase in population by 114 percent. Local officials estimate that the number of city residents will rise to 106,000 by the year 2020.
After a few years, several businesses arrived in the area. A rubber company looked for more land to buy in Arizona. More than 20,000 acres of farming area was purchased beside what is now the city of Avondale. Many of the farmers tilling the soil were brought over from Mexico. Several residential structures for the farmers were established in the Avondale area.
The city was later incorporated in 1946. Agriculture was Avondale's biggest industry, but the construction of houses, apartments, and commercial properties started in the 1980s. Many new establishments and retail centers in the city were created near Interstate 10. Avondale has a total area of 41.3 square miles, according to the country's latest survey.
There are three main school districts serving the town, Avondale Elementary District, Agua Fria Union High School District, and Littleton Elementary District. There are only three high schools in Avondale, and the only colleges in the city are Estrella Mountain Community College and the Universal Technical Institute.
The city's Fire Department started right after the Avondale's incorporation in December 1946. After a year, the city leaders formed the Fire Department with a set of volunteers from over 2,000 Avondale residents. To house the fire trucks and new equipment, the two-story Station No. 1 was built on the corner of Western Avenue and Sixth Street.
Because the city's public departments were still new, the fire station didn't get many state-of-the-art vehicles. In fact, one fire engine was a 1950 Chevy. The first full time firefighters were hired in 1975. In the 1990s, the city of Avondale already had 36,000 residents. A second fire station was soon created. In 1999, the city had just opened Station 172.
