National City, California is in the South Bay region of the San Diego metropolitan area, located in southwestern San Diego County. The city is rich in history, and it is also the second oldest community in San Diego. The climate has warm, dry summers and mild winters. Precipitation is between March and December. This means, the climate is great for touring, and there are plenty to see and enjoy. After all, the city has rich Victorian architecture, historic sites, good restaurants and budget-friendly hotels near the San Diego attraction sites.
The city was founded on July 7, 1868, and was later incorporated on September 17, 1887. It has an elevation of 66 feet. National City also has a water area of 1.84 square miles, and a land area of 7.28 square miles, bringing its total to 9.12 square miles. Its population in 2010 was 58,582, but this increased in 2016 when the city was home to 61,147 residents.
National City's depot, which is home to a trolley and train museum, was built in 1882 by a railroad company. This depot was the very first Pacific Coast terminus station of the railway's transcontinental line. This Italianate station owned by the city is the last representative of the stations built on the West Coast. Inside the depot are displays of artifacts, memorabilia, model trains, and streetcars. There is a magazine article for the train buffs, too. It had an old photo showing the rich electric streetcar history. The depot played a vital role in railroad history.
Adjacent to the existing railroad tracks and right across the street from National City's historic old depot is the city's railcar plaza at Bay Marina Drive and Harrison Avenue. This was once owned by National City's founder. The railcar played a vital part in transportation. It served as the first commuter-type train of the region. Many legendary people rode the train. Today, the original excursion train is on display at the city's railcar museum.
Another historic place in the city is a music hall. It was built in 1898 by someone who formerly mined silver in Colorado. It is considered to be acoustically perfect as the sound travels smoothly from one end of the hall to the other without any distortion. There is a wonderful 75-foot mural that decorates the recital hall ceiling. What is amazing about the place is that no two walls are exactly parallel.
Listed on the national register of historic places, National City's heritage square was the home of railroad executives. The design is unique to the area and was formed after Philadelphia's row houses. Today it is privately owned and maintained.
