Located in the northern region of Los Angeles County is the charter city of Lancaster. It sits in the Antelope Valley of the Mojave Desert. It is part of a twin city complex with Palmdale. It was once considered the 31st largest city in California. During the 2010 census, the city of Lancaster had 156,633 people. In 2016, this number increased by 2.2 percent, with 160,106 people living in the city. It has a water area of 0.26 square miles and a land area of 94.30 square miles, with a total area of 94.56 square miles.
Lancaster started as a town that grew from land that was used as a railroad station 1876. The tracks connected San Francisco and Los Angeles. The area only became a settlement after pieces of land were purchased from the railway company in 1884. People bought plots of land, and each acre cost around $6. When the 1890s came, the town of Lancaster was a flourishing community, with a train station, several residential structures, and the first weekly newspaper in Antelope Valley.
The town consisted mainly of ranches and cattle was one of its main industries, until 1898 after the discovery of gold. Lancaster residents also mined borax, a chemical use to manufacture cleaning products. These two became the next major industries of the town. The county of Los Angeles began construction of an aqueduct that was 233 miles long. This began in 1908, and it helped Lancaster flourish as a bedroom community, which housed the aqueduct workers.
In 1912, a high school was constructed in the valley, which was a huge draw for families with children. The school also started its high school dormitory system, which allowed students from far-away places to reside in Lancaster. More government construction across Lancaster revitalized the town. Recently civic leaders have proposed projects to help the city become a net-zero municipality, a community whose production of clean energy is more than the amount of consumption.
At the end of the 20th century, in 1990, the number of residents rose by an impressive 102.6 percent. There were 97,291 people living in Lancaster by then. At the beginning of the 21st century, there were 118,718 residents in Lancaster. This was a 22 percent population growth from the previous decade. Then, in 2010, the city reported that 156,633 people were living in it. The latest report in 2016 revealed that the city of Lancaster housed 160,106 residents, which was a 2.2 percent increase from the last six years. Lancaster is currently home to various industrial parks and defense contractors.
