Santee, CA Tidbits
The city of Santee is a suburban community in San Diego County. The land its residents inhabit once belonged to the Kumeyaay, a Native American group who established the Sinyeweche Village near the San Diego River. After the period of the Native American settlement, the area also saw land claims by Spain and Mexico.
One of the oldest structures in Santee is the dam site that was built by the Kumeyaay people in 1779. It was later used in the area and can still be seen today. The Spanish government divided the land and gave them to soldiers as grants. After that, they were sold to the government of the United States of America. Santee came from one of Spain's land grants until 4,000 acres of the area were developed as part of a farm in 1877. Soon, pomegranate and magnolia trees were planted in the area.
The community was first called "Cowleston". Nearby, is the Cowles Mountain, and the town was connected to another through the Cowles Station. In 1891, the Cowles School was built. Two years later, the town's name was changed to "Santee" after a prominent family in the community. The city was incorporated in 1980.
In 2010, the city's number of residents was at 53,413. In 2016, the estimated population is around 58,000 locals. Santee is also considered one of the cities in the country with the lowest crime rate. It also had a median household income of $79,667 in 2015. This was 21 percent higher than the median income of the state of California.
The city is surrounded by a lot of natural bodies. Santee is also the first one in San Diego County to complete its walkways that are part of the inter-county San Diego River Trail, The most popular path is the Walker Preserve Trail, a mile-long walkway that connects to two more trails in the eastern part of the city. The city is also bordered on the west side by the Mission Trails Regional Park. Its 7,220 acres of open space offers the residents a mountain view since Santee is also located next to the Cleveland National Forest. The nearby San Diego River is also accessible through parks and over 1,100 acres of preserve land.
The city of Santee has nine parks, including the Walker Preserve, which has a 1.3-mile track for hikers and cyclists. The park has drinking fountains, pavilions, picnic areas, access to the nearby river, and several historic equipment used by the early settlers of Santee for farming. Meanwhile, the city's Town Center Community Park has one location in the east and one in the west, although they both have lighted sports fields, picnic areas, and a playground.
The Santee School District and the Grossmont Union High School District serves the schools in the city. The latter serves Santee's two high schools, West Hills High School and Santana High School. Santee also has a higher education institution, San Diego Christian College, which used to be located in El Cajon. The city is home to many notable athletes, musicians, and other celebrities.
