Tanque Verde, AZ Tidbits
Tanque Verde is an affluent community located in Arizona. In 2000, it had only a little more than 16,000 people. In the 2010 census, however, the town had 117,517 residents. The town's history started when American ranchers moved from Tucson to further western areas to start their own farms in the 1860s.
Tanque Verde means "green tank" and it referred to the algae in a prominent stock water tank that was found in the area in the 19th century. During this time, most of the area's residents were indigenous people. Aside from them, Tanque Verde also saw several Americans living in a nearby structure. Many people coming from Tucson and other nearby communities moved to Tanque Verde to start new businesses and new lives.
These residents soon started the town's school district in 1886. A nearby structure that housed several Americans, meanwhile, closed in 1891. The building wasn't left abandoned for long, though. Some Hispanic people from California arrived in Tanque Verde and took over the fortress, turning it into a residential building. These people planted, sowed, and harvested plants and fruits. They called the place "El Fuerte". Many of these Hispanic families opted to move to where Tanque Verde now stands. It was just a short trip away from El Fuerte. There, they built ranches and houses and the community thrived.
Other settlers of European ancestry came and bought out the smaller farms. Many of the original homesteaders sold their farms to rich businessmen, which is why the town now is a community full of upscale restaurants, entertainment centers, and subdivisions. In fact, Tanque Verde has the highest median household income in the southern region of Arizona.
There are several ranches still in operation in the town. Tanque Verde's original ranch itself was established in 1868, making it even older than the state of Arizona. There have been many owners through the ranch's history, but it still remains one of the most visited and profitable ranches in town.
It stands within the boundaries of a national park and forest, which gives the ranch an advantage when it comes to offering rides and tours to visitors. According to the ranch's current owner, many of their visitors are tourists from Europe who want the American cowboy experience. It is the largest working ranch in the entire country, with over 640 acres of land and more than 150 horses shuffling around.
Located on 7000 E. Tanque Verde Road is a museum, which houses collections from locals and indigenous people. One exhibit displays indigenous textiles that were created before the 1940s. There are saddle blankets, a chief's blanket, weavings, and even optical pieces that employ tribal designs.
There are also displays of ancient world and state maps created hundreds and thousands of years ago. There are also galleries that display Native American and Mesoamerican handicrafts and weavings.
A lot of people also visit the town's falls. Summers very warm in Tanque Verde, so, during this time, the town experiences a surge in the number of tourists in the area. The five waterfalls range from 20 to 100 feet tall. The place is a favorite getaway destination for many students from the University of Arizona.
