Do you know which town has been recognized as the "Best Place to Work" by the Phoenix Business Journal? It's Queen Creek, a town in both Maricopa and Pinal counties in Arizona. With more than 26,000 residents, Queen Creek is no small peanut. It's a growing community rich in historic landmarks, natural attractions, and artful establishments to keep you entertained for days on end.
One of the more interesting things to do in Queen Creek is to attend the American Heritage Festival, which is the largest educational living history event in the southwest region of the United States. It's the biggest history lesson you will ever get in your entire life.
The farms have a long history in Queen Creek. The farmers in the area planted cotton, wheat, and vegetables. Later on, the Schnepfs started growing potatoes for potato chip manufacturers. Their farm grew and the family planted more crops like the Queen Palms, Mexican fan palms, and pine trees. It didn't take long for the Schnepf Farms to become a popular and major vegetable exporter. The family now had 5,000 acres of land they had cultivated and could earn from, but it wasn't until visitors started asking to pick some of their corn and peaches that Ray Schnepf decided to sell them for U-Pick and his farm land had truly become a source of commerce and business that became well-known throughout the area.
After Rittenhouse became Queen Creek. Throughout the years, the farm also played host to carnival rides, a zoo, a bakery, and much more. Eventually, a museum was built that would reveal the history of the farm since the 1800s. Now, many visitors drop by the area to see the animals, the produce, and the museum. Some of the original buildings that were built in the 19th century now contain new stores like the County Store and Bakery and original family home is now a wedding reception area simply called the "Farmhouse".
Queen Creek got its name from one of the creeks that rested at the foot of a mountain that housed a mine called the Silver Queen. The creek was once called Picket Post Creek, but when the mine began operations, it was renamed Queen Creek by the locals. The town was called Rittenhouse then because of its railroad line, which was located near the Rittenhouse and Ellsworth roads. Eventually, because of the importance of the mine and the creek, the town was called Queen Creek.
During the 1920s, many farmers and miners migrated to the area from Mexico. Soon, the town's population became more diverse when former German prisoners of war and Philippine immigrants started working on the farms. Queen Creek has a lot of historic farm sites like the Ellsworth Brothers Farms, which was started by Leo Ellsworth, who had acquired the Rittenhouse Farm in 1928. Their farms grew cotton and other vegetables and also reared cattle and sheep. Leo Ellsworth also brought in and used the first phone line in the town.
Queen Creek has strong ties to its history since many of its residents fought hard to preserve their local heritage and landmarks.
