Green Valley, AZ Tidbits
Green Valley is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, with only 23,765 residents at the time of the 2010 census. Located in the Santa Cruz Valley, this small town's history began thousands of years ago.
The first inhabitants of the area were tribes that had roamed the areas of Mexico and Arizona. After these indigenous groups, the area was discovered by several European explorers. Later on, many Americans who had come from the north settled in this area looking for better places to retire or live out the rest of their lives in a warmer climate.
In 1953, visitors coming along Interstate 19 saw a sign for what would be a new community. Years later, in 1964, settlers came to the area and bought 2,900 acres of land to start what they envisioned would be a successful residential community. Then, Green Valley was born.
It was filled with houses designed using the 18th century Spanish style to make the new development look more historic. The town now has many houses with arched colonnades, wrought iron screens, and red roofs. Because of the landscape and the laidback vibe of the town, Green Valley became a retirement community for many people from the northern regions who wanted to retire somewhere in the south.
When it first began in the 1960s, Green Valley only had around 500 residents. Now, that population has ballooned to more than 20,000. One of the things that people love about the area is that it's part of the astronomy capital of the world. This means that Green Valley, and many of its surrounding areas, has 300 days of warm sunlight, giving residents and visitors a clear view of the night sky.
Green Valley isn't incorporated and stands on land that is part of the 46,679 acres of a land grant in the 16th century. The residents of Green Valley can find a lot of things to do by simple visiting its neighbors like the town of Tubac, which used to be an artists' colony from the 1930s to the 1960s.
Nearby is also a canyon that's considered a top spot for bird-watching, especially for observing migratory birds. The canyon's cool weather also makes it a welcome destination and challenge for those who want to experience hiking Arizona's beautiful but rocky landscape. It's located just 11 miles east of Green Valley and has a generally good climate. When December rolls in, the place is filled with people skiing up and down the mountains.
Just a few minutes away from Green Valley is the second highest peak in Arizona. Nearby is also another canyon, which is just one and a half hour away from the city. It can only be accessed through a shuttle service, which travels to the area every day.
One interesting and unique thing in the Green Valley area is that Interstate 19 is the only interstate in the United States of America that uses the metric system. This little historical tidbit happened because of a metric conversion act that was passed in 1975. During this time, road signs on Interstate 19, which extends from Arizona to Mexico, bore distances measured using the metric system, which is different for other highways.
Green Valley is for people looking to retire in an area that offers great value for good money. There are over 59 different homeowners associations in Green Valley. The different recreational centers in Green Valley offer golf courses, swimming pools, fitness centers, and more.
