Avondale had a population of 76,238 during the 2010 census and its number is only growing every year. It has a water area of 0.07 square miles and a land area of 45.25 square miles. In 1950, it only had 2,505 residents. In 2016, the recent survey revealed that the city of Avondale had 82,881 residents.

It started as a farming community and was finally incorporated in 1946. A tire and rubber company bought many farm lands in the Arizona region to cultivate its own cotton for manufactured tires. The company purchased over 20,000 acres of area near Avondale. Many of the workers on the farm were immigrants from Mexico who contributed greatly to the tight-knit community of what would soon become the modern Avondale.

Since its founding, the city has experienced rapid population growth and economic development, especially during the 1980s. Like many cities in the area, Avondale once relied on farming cotton and alfalfa. Now, there are different businesses popping up all over the area and the city's economy is expanding to other industries. The city is now considered one of the major bedroom communities for the Phoenix metropolitan area, its suburbs a popular residential neighborhood for many employers and laborers.

The city is also home to several parks and public art collections. It's also home to a famous race track that hosts multiple races every year. It's a one-mile tri-oval race track that is also an important landmark, not just for racers, but for Arizona locals as well. At the top of Mountain Hill near the tracks is another historical landmark within the city boundaries. It is the point of intersection of the south side of Gila River and the mouth of Salt River. The initial point of the rivers bears a stone marker for identification.

The original marker was created in 1851, but it was restructured and remarked in 1944. The marker was redone in 1962. The landmark underwent many transformations and re-establishments due, essentially, to the weather and climate. It was redone several times in 1984 and again in 2006 because the plaque needed to be replaced.

Since the city of Avondale is situated in Maricopa County, there are many natural parks that show off the area's desert terrains and exciting wildlife. The desert botanical garden has been around for more than seven decades. Located in a local park, the botanical garden is a place where scientists preserve and research desert plants.

There more than 50,000 plants in different gardens spread over 140 acres of land. The garden's flashlight tour happens from May to September and is a great way to experience the garden's desert terrain at night and along the trail where you can spot nocturnal animals.

The garden tours happen daily and allow visitors to observe and learn more about different plants from the Sonoran desert like the colorful palo verde tree, the famous saguaro cactus, and the tall boojum trees, among others. Bird-watchers also frequent the place. They can hike along the garden trails to find the different bird species hopping on the trees and cacti.
