Like its predecessor, Sun City West is a retirement community developed by the Del Webb Development Company during the late 1970s. Sun City, the first community for retirees, was already growing and there was a high demand for more communities like it. The company, therefore, decided to develop another town for those looking to retire in a much warmer climate and a more laid-back setting in Arizona. The Sun City West community was finished in 1998, and soon, it was followed by the creation of Sun City Grand.

At the 2010 census, Sun City West had 24,535 residents and its slogan is "Everything's right here." That might have something to do with the fact that each retirement community designed by the Del Webb Company is self-contained, which means that everything you could ever want or need is just right in Sun City West. This is one of the best places for active adults aged 55 and above where they can play golf, billiards, or darts, or spend a few hours at the local swimming pool, or do all their shopping within the community.

Inside Sun City West, there are over 100 chartered clubs, seven golf courses and bowling alleys. There are several recreation centers and sports complexes in the town so you'll never get bored whatever you want to do. You can find centers with Olympic-sized pools, fitness centers, several mini-golf courses, parks with ramadas and a playground for children, a greenhouse for plant lovers and gardeners, club rooms for meetings and gatherings, and a G-scale model railroad track. There will also be parks where residents can exercise, play softball, and join workshops for woodworking.

Sun City West is all about offering residents variety and an endless stream of possibilities and opportunities to keep fit, mentally and physically. This is why you'll find that many centers in the city offer ballrooms,pickleball courts, and facilities where you can do sports like lawn bowling, pickleball, racquetball, table tennis, bocce ball, and billiards. There are also gyms, doggie parks, a sports pavilion, a walking track, an arts and crafts club, and most importantly, the town's own library. Boutiques and other retail shops are also situated strategically within the community so that it would be easier for residents to buy clothes, furniture, and more.

Since Sun City West caters to older adults, it has a lot of areas dedicated to urban walking paths. These are great ways to exercise and see the beauty of the community and the developed landscape. There are many hiking miles running through the various parks in Sun City West. At the Palm Ridge Recreation Center, you can take either the 2.3-mile Chuckwalla trail or the 4.6-mile Javelina trail. At R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, you can walk the 3.4-mile Oleandar trail or go down the Ocotillo trail, which is 3.6 miles long. At the Beardsley Center, you can take the Tall Pines trail, which is 2.9 miles along Stardust Boulevard to Aurora Drive until you reach Rocksprings Drive. There's also the Praying Mantis Trail, which is 4.5 miles long. The Kuentz Recreation Center, meanwhile, offers the 2.3-mile Coyote Trail and the 2.7-mile Roadrunner path.

When you've had your fill of walking trails, you can spend the rest of your week watching local performers or acting troupes on stage. The Stardust Theater in Sun City West is home to the Theater West group and their shows. The Rhythm Tappers also hold performances in the theater, which also hosts film screenings and several other presentations. The Arizona Broadway Theater is another place where you can watch musicals. In Surprise, you can watch the West Valley Symphony, which holds five concerts every year at the Valley Vista Performing Arts Center.

Sun City West residents can also visit the trails all around Maricopa County. The Maricopa Trail itself is a 242-mile-long trail that connects to the major parks around the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Whether you want to hike or cycle along the trail, you'll be able visit several parks along the way, like the Buckeye Hills Regional Park through the parks in Cave Creek, Estrella Mountain, Lake Pleasant, McDowell Mountain, San Tan Mountain, South Mountain, Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, Usery Mountain, and White Tank Mountain.

The Ford Canyon Trail is a wide track lined with river rocks that had been planted their long ago by prison inmates. The trail follows Ford Canyon up to another canyon where you can see white granite bedrock tanks. This is where the name White Tank Mountain came from. Climb up the canyon and you'll see a panoramic view of western Phoenix and the rest of Arizona's lovely desert terrain. After a day exploring the regional parks, you can then go home to tranquil Sun City West for a fitful sleep.
