The United States of America has many designated retirement communities. One such place is Sun City, an unincorporated community in Maricopa County. It sits within the Phoenix Metropolitan Area and had 37,499 residents during the 2010 census.

Many of its residents are snowbirds, people from the North who come to the South to live in a town with a warm climate. Most of them are still active older people, aged 55 years old and above, so Sun City offers many fitness centers, recreation complexes, parks, and shopping malls.

The Sun City community was opened on January 1, 1960. It started with only five model houses, a shopping center, one recreation center, and a golf course. During its opening week, more than 100,000 people attended, drawn to the area's beautiful scenery and homes.

Because of the large number of prospective buyers, Sun City was effectively featured as the cover story in one issue of an international magazine. The retirement community was started by a well-known real estate developing company. Over the years, the company continued to expand Sun City before eventually starting satellite retirement communities in the Sun Belt, which is a region of the United States that stretches from Southeast to Southwest.

This is considered the best region to create subdivisions and communities for people who want a mild climate and largely sunny weather throughout the year. Several retirement towns were built by the company in the last few decades. The Sun City West was built in the 1970s, Sun City Grand in 1990s, Sun City Anthem in 1999, and Sun City Festival in 2006.

One interesting fact about the history of Sun City is that the town stands on what used to be the ghost town of Marinette. The area was used in the early 20th century as a farming land and orchard for citrus fruits, apricots, olives, and other crops. In 1920, a cotton company in the Southwest, which was a subsidiary of an internationally known tire and rubber Company, bought the land.

During this time, the rubber company was on the hunt for a prime piece of farming land. This would serve as the company's own source of cotton and even rubber for tire manufacturing. It was around the middle of the century that the town of Marinette experienced a population decline. The rubber company bought it and established on it the newest retirement home in Arizona, Sun City.

Most of the residents in Sun City are active senior citizens. There are over 120 chartered clubs in the community, like making crafts in a woodshop, playing card games, dancing, reading books, and more. The retirement community is also home to several well-known groups in the local area. Sun City has an orchestra group, a piano club, a readers theater ensemble, a choral group, a troupe of community theater actors, and a ukulele club, just to name a few.

There are also nine fitness clubs in the community and they offer aerobics, aqua fitness sessions, and fitness classes. The standard of living is quite high in Sun City. Luxury resorts and spas, upscale shopping centers, and recreation areas give residents an affluent lifestyle.

Some of the homes in Sun City look like they were preserved from the past. Many of the homes that the real estate company had created during the 1960s and 70s are still around. Many of the city's ground floor apartments are surrounded by lush lawns, tall trees, and beautiful gardens. Residents who need more space usually buy or rent apartment-style condos with multiple levels.
