Located in the eastern part of the Maricopa County, Scottsdale is a city in Arizona that has been dubbed as the "desert version of Miami's South Beach" by a national publication since it is home to many hotels and recreation parks. The city is surrounded by Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and some unincorporated communities in the county.
The city was named after its founder in 1894 and it was incorporated in 1951. Like most of the towns in Maricopa County, Scottsdale was also inhabited originally by an ancient indigenous tribe that was known for the canals they built and their advance irrigation system.
In the mid-1880s, several settlers arrived in the area and bought 640 acres to turn it into a farming area. Soon enough, there were a growing number of farmers who cultivated fruits, potatoes, and more. Since then, Scottsdale became one of the most progressive agricultural towns in the Maricopa County, further expanding its tourist and scenic spots.
Scottsdale is home to the largest indoor butterfly garden in the entire United States of America. This center is home to a thousand species of butterflies from around the world. It also has a state-of-the-art facility, including a glass hall where the butterflies flutter freely, and an interactive exhibit for children. The garden is situated close to a community managed by an indigenous group of people.
Scottsdale's water parks cover more than 6,000 square feet, and they usually host a variety of activities as well. The city is also home to a large society of people who work as professional mermaids. Scottsdale is also surrounded by several hiking trails and summits in the nearby desert preserve.
The most prominent hiking trail is barrier-free and runs for about a half a mile with no elevation gains. There are interactive exhibits around the preserve. A nearby river is usually always filled with people kayaking, swimming, or fishing. The river banks are also favorite picnic spots.
There's a weekend bike trail for both kids and adults in Scottsdale. The path travels through downtown to central Scottsdale, which is filled with shops and restaurants. Scottsdale also has a number of museums. One of them is a city museum about the state's Western heritage and history.
The center dedicates its exhibits to all the 19 states of the American West, celebrating its history and culture. With an area of 43,000 square feet, this large building is home to a hundred artifacts, interactive exhibits, vintage objects, and old photos.
Some of the rotating exhibits also feature ancient collections from Scottsdale residents who have lived their years in the area. The building is conveniently located in the downtown Scottsdale district.
Aside from the museum, there are several more historic houses in the city. An old grammar school that was built in 1901 still stands in the center of Scottsdale. Several houses built in 1875 and 1925 have been preserved. A private railroad car and a polo club built in 1924 can also still be seen today. Scottsdale's city hall, which was designed in 1968, is also considered one of the most beautiful establishments in the community.
