The Green Valley community in Pima County had over 23,765 residents in the 2010 census. Although it is unincorporated, it remains one of the most historic places in the state of Arizona.

According to historians, the valley's history began thousands of years ago when it was still inhabited by ancient indigenous tribes. One of them were known for their irrigation system and walled compounds. Soon after, there were other tribes, likely descendants of the ancient cultures, who appeared in the area. After them came explorers from Europe. Green Valley went through numerous hands and names, from the Spanish and Mexican governments to its current community in the United States.

Green Valley is now a well-known retirement community. It was established in 1964, but its modern history began in 1953 when 2,900 acres of land was purchased to build a community near Interstate 19. This was to be a new residential housing project. The structures were patterned after 19th century Spanish colonial style houses, with arched colonnades and red roofs.

The town had started small, with only 500 residents. Now, the people number in the twenty thousands. The community was established on a piece of land that was part of an old land grant. Now, there are more than 50 homeowner associations in Green Valley. The town is surrounded by copper mines, hiking trails, and bird paths that connect to a nearby mountain range. The median home value in Green Valley amounts to a little more than $161,000. It has a land area of 32.24 square miles and a water area of 0.01 square miles.

Green Valley has a semi-arid climate so it has a mild winter climate from October to March. It is located near the western border of a river and is surrounded by other communities. It is just 20 miles away from the city of Tucson and 40 miles north of a city in Mexico. Although sometimes, the temperature can drop to a cooler degree, Green Valley still sees a lot more sun.

The retirement community was marketed to older people, aged 55 years and older, who come from the north and want to settle in the south for its warmer climate. There are several programs and activities under a non-profit Green Valley recreation department, which operates 13 centers including golf courses, fitness centers, and swimming pools.

Green Valley is surrounded by cities and towns with a lot of entertainment centers and historic landmarks. Moreover, several state universities in Arizona are just a few kilometers away. The community's median age is 71.5. Its median household income is $46,682, which is a little higher than that of the Tucson Metropolitan Area and Pima County. Its median property value is less than the previous year. There are more than 3,500 employed residents in the community. The number is not high since most of the residents are retired and live off their pensions.

Those who are employed mostly work in administrative jobs. This is 16 percent of working residents. Around 13.9 percent have sales positions and 8.4 percent have jobs related to management. The highest paid workers in Green Valley are fire station supervisors, businessmen and financial analysts, managers, teachers and school superintendents, and health practitioners.
