Goodyear, AZ Tidbits
Goodyear, Arizona is located in Maricopa County and it is a part of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area and had more than 65,000 residents during the 2010 census. Between 1990 and 2000, the city was known as the third fastest growing place in all of Arizona. In 2008, the city won the All-American City Award and is home to two major teams that play for the Major League Baseball. They hold their spring training at the city's Goodyear Ballpark, a large stadium that can seat over 10,000 guests.
The city's history began in 1917 when an executive officer from a rubber and tire bought around 16,000 acres of land in Arizona. The purpose of the area was to serve as a farm for cotton, which the company would use for vehicle tire threads. The company's tire production was important to the country's economy and international trade.
Many of the areas where the company got its cotton were unable to ship material for the manufacture of tires for several years. In order to continue the tire production, the company sent scouts to find acres of land that would yield quality cotton.
The company executives later learned that areas in Arizona were conducive to growing cotton that they could use for their tires. The company then established several farming areas in Arizona. Many workers were hired from a neighboring country and were housed in five farm settlements.
The small community that took care of the company's farms was called "Egypt" because of the Egyptian cotton that they cultivated. Eventually, though, it became known as "Goodyear" after the company that started the community in the first place. After several years, the farming areas became more than just growers for the company's manufacturing materials.
The area became an official community during its incorporation in November 1946. During that time, the town had only 151 homes, a little more than 200 apartments, a drug store, one grocery store, a barbershop, a beauty salon, and one service station. Eventually, it became an official town, called Goodyear, in 1985.
During the 1940s, the farming lands were used again. Many people also flocked to the area after an air facility was opened around the same time. Many locals from other states settled in Goodyear to work at the tire and rubber company. More than 7,000 people worked on the cotton farms and factories, which helped the company produce more than a million pounds of aircraft frames.
Around this time, the company also started manufacturing "blimps" or rubber dirigibles. These blimps were constantly seen hovering over football games or inside stadiums for other sports tournaments. In the 1950s, several female employees at the company's aircraft department in Arizona manufactured blimps that bore faces of cartoon characters.
The city of Goodyear has many recreational parks. Also, the city has been ranked No. 7 among "America's Best 50 Places to Live" by a finance magazine. The city's median household income is over $20,000 higher than the country's average household income. The city is also considered one of the safest places in the country.
There are two artificial lakes in Goodyear, with miles of pathways like the Rainbow Trail or the Baseline Trail in the Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Located on West Vineyard Avenue, the park contains 19,840 acres of desert and mountains. On it is a large wetland that has many rare plants and animals.
