Tanque Verde, AZ Tidbits
Northeast of Tucson is the suburb of Tanque Verde. It had a humble population of 16,195 residents during the 2000 census, but the numbers increase every year. Just a few miles from Tucson, this town began as a small community for ranchers in the 1860s.
According to the locals, the name "Tanque Verde", which means "green tank", came from the stock water tank in the area during the 19th century. It had green algae in it; hence, the place was called "Tanque Verde".
During the 1800s, the Tanque Verde area was used constantly by several groups of people, from indigenous tribes to European explorers. Many people passing through eventually settled in the area during the late 19th century. By 1886, the residents were already creating a local school district.
One regional structure in Tanque Verde stopped operations and closed its doors in 1891, but it didn't remain empty for long. Some immigrants from Baja California and Sonora used the structure as their home. These Hispanic farmers used the area to plant and harvest vegetables and fruits. They eventually called their new home "El Fuerte".
Many of these farmers and their families went up to the Tanque Verde area. There, they established farming communities. These families built small ranches, which contributed greatly to the area's agriculture industry and preservation of the natural desert terrain. Through the years, many of the smaller ranches were bought out by larger ones or were sold to corporations.
During the early 1940s and 1950s, there was a lot of demand for cotton, especially by large rubber and tire companies. The place they usually got their cotton from was inaccessible during that time. The same thing happened to other businesses so the need for farmland for growing cotton went up.
Many cotton farming communities were later on established in Tanque Verde. The town continued to progress as more and more people settled in the area to find better job opportunities. It also helped that the region around Tanque Verde was still relatively untouched.
It had clean air and streams and the plots of land were still largely wide enough, providing more living space, as well as extra acres for farming. In 1989, the town was the setting for several television programs that depicted the lives of ranchers in the Tucson area.
Tanque Verde gained some fame because of those shows and soon many more people began to arrive in the town. In 2005, the town had 1,600 students. Even with a small number of school children, Tanque Verde ranks among the highest standardized test scores in Arizona.
The town may have started as a farming community, but it is now one of the most affluent places in the state. According to the United States' census department, Tanque Verde has the highest median household income in the entire southern Arizona.
The town is located within Pima County and is just a few miles from Tucson. Within Pima County, there are several museums, galleries, and historic buildings, as well as natural tourist attractions like canyons and lakes. One desert museum, which is considered a world-class outdoor one, is famous for its interactive exhibits. Travel publications have ranked this as the number one tourist attraction in the Tucson area.
