In 2000, Fountain Hills was named as the eighth fastest growing place among towns and cities in Arizona. Home to the grand fountain, which was once the tallest in the whole world, Fountain Hills lies in Maricopa County.
The city of Fountain Hills borders the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, Scottsdale, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Fountain Hills was founded by a community developer who named it after the enormous man-made fountain at the heart of the town.
The once tallest fountain in the world for over ten years now ranks in the fourth place and can be found in Fountain Hills. It was built in 1970. The 560-feet fountain is higher than the Washington Monument and taller than the Notre Dame Cathedral. It is also 110 feet higher than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt and is considered grander than the Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park.
Surrounded by desert and mountain ranges, Fountain Hills houses one of its prominent landmarks, the Red Mountain. This 2,830-feet-tall mountain has a deep trench on the western side known as "Gunsight". Some call this mountain the "Fire Rock" since a subtle red color glows from it as the sun sets. It regularly sees thousands of visitors every year.
While Fire Rock has an amazing red glow, the most majestic color-changing peaks can also be found in other spots in Fountain Hills. The Four Peaks Purple Mountain offers people a color display as it changes with the light, from lavender to violet to deep purple. At 7,657 feet, this mountain is where one can find the finest amethyst in the world. The city reports that hundreds of thousands of tourists have traveled long miles just to get a glimpse of this natural landscape.
The McDowell Mountain Range is considered one of the best places to hike on in Fountain Hills. Standing at 4,304 feet, the highest range is the McDowell Peak. Another mountain range to the south is called Fire Necklace Mountain. It got its name after a fire burned down its slope and encircled a good part of it. The mountain ranges were once home to some ancient Native American people. Some petroglyphs and artifacts were found here.
Fountain Hills has four outdoor parks like the McDowell Mountain Regional Park, which has approximately 50 miles of trails. For expert mountain bikers, there are three loop tracks and an 8.2-mile-long loop, a 3.0-mile sport loop, and lastly, a 2.9 mile-technical loop. Families can camp here, too, since there are over 76 individual sites for camping or trailer parking.
One of the city's golf courses was voted as one of the 100 Best Golf Shops by a worldwide golf magazine. Located just twenty minutes from Fountain Hills, Saguaro Lake allows fishing, boating, and kayaking. During spring and summer, the lake sees a hundred visitors. Aside from the tall summits, mountain ranges, and the lakes, the city is also known for having a lot of clear days throughout the year. It has a mild desert climate and has a land area of 20.36 square miles and a water area of 0.09 square miles.
