Friendswood, TX Tidbits
With only 35,805 residents during the 2010 census, Friendswood, Texas is considered a small city, like a big town. In 2007, CNN's Money Magazine placed Friendswood in its "100 America's Best Places to Live". The city lies within the Galveston and Harris Counties and is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area.
The name of the town comes from the founding group, which was called the Society of Friends. The community started in 1895 when the group went to Texas to establish a community that was far from urban cities.
The land belonged to another settler after a few years. Around 1,538 acres of the prairie was surrounded by several streams like the Chigger Creek, Mary's Creek, Coward's Creek, and Clear Creek. This made the area very attractive for those who wanted to farm. The group eventually acquired the deed of trust and in 1895 the town was named "Friendswood".
News of a new town spread. Soon, many other settlers were moving to Texas to start a new life on a land that primarily consisted of orange and fig orchards and rice fields. During the 1900s, the townspeople constructed a two-story wooden structure they called the "Academy" that would serve as the community's school and town hall. In 1949, the residents were finally able to construct a stone building that would serve as the center of town activity.
Although the town began as a small colony, the locals were soon joined by many newcomers from other states. Many of these newcomers were attracted to the housing developments in Houston and had stumbled upon Friendswood. These people started their own farms, harvesting figs over 18,000 acres of land. More Americans settled in the area as the support for farmers grew.
During the 1950s, the town had less than a thousand residents, with only several establishments to serve the people. There wasn't even a bank, a police station, a medical center or a pharmacy.
A decade later, the town was incorporated. This prompted the town to elect a mayor, a council, and a lawman. This was a step in the right direction since at this time many people who were working at NASA decided to live in Friendswood.
Several establishments and professions appeared in the town. More houses were constructed, as well as schools and businesses. To preserve the city's history, the locals also built a 1971 replica of a pioneer's original home. This now serves as a museum, which houses Friendswood's vintage photos, historical information, and more.
The community is affluent, with the average household income in 2016 amounting to $131,024 for most of its residents. The city offers single-family residential structures with different architectural styles. Friendswood has nine city parks and two country parks tucked away from the busy streets.
All in all, the city offers 266 acres of nature trails and park area. The city offers several celebrations and programs for young and old residents. Tens of thousands of people join the city's festivals. The city's biggest employer is the Friendswood Independent School District, followed by the local government and the Clear Creek Independent School District.
Most of the city's residents are middle-aged and have stable, high-paying jobs. Friendswood also has a 98 percent high school graduation rate, with over 40 percent of the residents having a bachelor's degree. Families and single careerists consider Friendswood a great place of residence when it comes to finding good schools, establishing a business, and raising kids.
