Denver, CO Tidbits
In 1858, a group of prospectors from Lawrence, Kansas established a mining community in the South Platte River during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. They called their new home "Montana City" while the area was still part of the Kansas Territory.
However, the mining town didn't last and it was later abandoned. This community, however, soon gave way to what would someday be Denver, Colorado. It is nicknamed the "Mile-High City" because it's the highest major city in the United States, having an elevation of one mile above sea level. Most days of the year, the city experiences partly cloudy days and 115 clear days. Its weather is mostly affected by its geography since it is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.
In 2016, Denver had a population of 693,060 people, making it the 19th most populous city in the country. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. In the same year, U.S. News and World Report ranked Denver the number one city to live in the entire country. It also helps that the city also has more than 70 neighborhoods and communities with different and distinct features.
The place was called "Denver City" not after the town of the same name in Texas, but to impress a Kansas governor with the same name. A few years after Denver was incorporated, it became the seat of Arapahoe County from 1861 to 1902. The town dropped the "City" from its official name and just went by "Denver".
Now, the city is a bustling metropolis known for its quality schools, affordable housing, and well-known education centers. The Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus in Downtown Denver offers a lot of activities and displays all throughout the year. It has a variety of scientific displays and galleries for social role plays that are designed to be interactive.
One gallery is called the Big Backyard where kids can make a nest, climb up and down structures, and scavenge for food to save in their burrows. The Box Canyon is a series of small boxes made for young kids, from ages one to four. The Altitude is made for older kids where they can climb three stories to reach the top where they can get a 360-degree view of Colorado's natural beauty.
The Molly Brown House on 1340 Pennsylvania Street is also known as the "House of Lions". It is a historic home that once belonged to an American socialite and philanthropist who also survived the Titanic. The house was built during the 1880s and was constructed in the Queen Anne architectural style, as well as other popular designs during that time.
At one time, the house became the home of a Colorado politician. After that, it became a boarding house for the new workers during the 20th century. Another historic structure in the city connected to the Brown family is the Molly Brown Summer House, also known as the Avoca Lodge. It used to be a retreat house and is now open to the public.
