With over 109,726 residents, Centennial is the tenth most populous municipality in the state of Colorado. It's a fairly new city, having only been incorporated in 2001, but it was the biggest one in the entire history of the United States, with residents coming from unincorporated portions of Arapahoe County, Castlewood, and SouthGlenn. The city covers 27.9 square miles and is divided by Interstate 25. On the highway's west side lies the city's business district while the east side is primarily a residential area.
The name "Centennial" was given to the community in 2000 because Colorado was nicknamed the "Centennial State" since it became part of the United States of America during the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1876. The city is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Area.
Centennial has been voted 15th safest city in the United States, and it is also home to an award-winning school district. There are also several private elementary and middle schools in Centennial. The city has also been named one of the best places to live in America by several national publications and finance magazines. The municipality ranks high in terms of education, safety, and quality of living in the country.
The city of Centennial started in 1998 when several people met at a pancake house to talk about the possibility of incorporating their community. This was brought on by the proposed annexation from the nearby Greenwood Village. At first, the petition to incorporate the city was dismissed, but their second try got them 2,500 signatures. This was known as the "Centennial Petition" because it was what got the court to approve the incorporation. At the beginning, the newly incorporated city had a tax rate of one percent. Currently, the rate is now 2.5 percent.
