The city of Torrance, California is located in South Bay region of Los Angeles County. It was incorporated on May 12, 1921. It has an elevation of 89 feet. Torrance has a water area of 0.07 square miles and a land area of 20.48 square miles, with a total area of 20.55 square miles. It is ranked 8th in Los Angeles County, 39th in the state of California, and 171st in the United States.
Torrance was part of a land grant under the Spanish rule in 1784 called a "rancho." This "rancho" was later divided into different plots of land in 1846. The town was named after a real estate developer who purchased several acres of land from the "rancho" and hired a landscape artist to design a master planned community in the 1900s. This town was established officially in 1912, and it was incorporated in May 1921.
Several streets bordered the town when it was first established, namely Western Avenue, Plaza Del Amo, Carson Street, Crenshaw Boulevard, and Del Amo Boulevard. The first residential street in the new town was Gramercy, followed by Andreo. These streets were home to several old houses, which turned 100 in 2012. Today, this area is considered Torrance's historic district or Old Town Torrance. Another notable area in Torrance is the neighborhood, El Nido, which is home to many families that came from Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Greece, among others. During the 20th century, they were later joined by families from Mexico and other Latin American countries. These people were often employed to work in the farming, petroleum, manufacturing, and fish canning industries.
The city of Torrance is considered a coastal community in the southwestern region of Los Angeles County. As such, it is bordered by Redondo Beach Boulevard, Lawndale, Gardena, Western Avenue, Harbor Gateway, Palos Verdes Hills, and more. It is just 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
