The city of Pomona is located in the county of Los Angeles, California. It sits between the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire. The city was named "Pomona" after a contest in 1875 among the residents because it was connected to planting fruit trees. It was first settled in by indigenous people, but it was later inhabited by several settlers from other states and communities in the 1830s. The city of Pomona was incorporated in 1888.
The city did eventually become a major center for the growing and harvest of citrus fruit. During the 1920s, it was even considered the queen of the citrus belt, and it had one of the highest per-capita levels of income in the country. Aside from the citrus industry, Pomona's economy also experienced tremendous growth because of the presence of movie studios.
When the 1980s rolled in, the city's newest neighborhood, Phillips Ranch, began construction of new residential structures. Because of this, more and more people started settling in Pomona.
In 1890, 3,634 people were living in Pomona. This increased by 52.1 percent in 1900 when the city was home to 5,526 residents. After ten years, the city had 10,207 people living in it. During the 1930 census, the city had 20,804 residents. This was a 54 percent increase. When the 1990s arrived, the national census revealed that 131,723 people were living in Pomona. This was a 42 percent. In 2000, the city of Pomona had a population of 149,473 residents. This was a 13.5 percent increase from the previous decade. In 2010, however, the number decreased by 0.3 percent. This reversed in 2016, when the city experienced a population growth of 2.3 percent. There were 152,494 people living in Pomona at that time.
There are four public high schools and three academies in Pomona. In the northern part of the city, the students there are zoned to another school district, which manages one elementary school, an intermediate school, and one high school. There is also a charter high school in Pomona. Southwest of the intersection of State Route 57 and Interstate 10 is a state university. Another higher education institution is located south of Interstate 10. It is one of the biggest health science universities in the state. Pomona is also home to two private universities and one community college. One private university is also recognized as a historic landmark because it was founded in 1887. Currently, it sits in Claremont, a nearby city. It was relocated there in 1889.
