Compton, CA Tidbits
Compton is one of the oldest cities in the Los Angeles County. It was the 8th city to be incorporated in the state of California. It is located south of downtown Los Angeles, and because of its proximity to other commercial cities, it earned the title "The Hub City". Neighborhoods in Compton consisted of Sunny Cove, Leland, Downtown Compton, and Richland Farms.
In 1784, the Spanish government gave over 75,000 acres of land to one of its people. He was the beneficiary to vast territories in the Los Angeles Basin called Rancho San Pedro. Because of his contribution to the city's history, Dominguez Hills, one of the unincorporated communities near Compton, was named after him.
The city is also home to a tree that is a natural boundary marker of the original rancho dating back to the 1850s. The famous Eagle Tree still stands to this day at the intersection of Poppy St. and Short St. It was recognized as a historical marker, and a plaque was placed there in 1947. After 1848, the ranch land was divided into pieces and parcels.
In 1867, a crowd of 30 colonists settled in the area. The group had traveled by wagon train from Stockton, California in the quest of making money aside from mining gold. Initially, the settlers named their community Gibsonville, but it was later called Comptonville. They had to reduce the name to just Compton in order to avoid confusion with Yuba County's Comptonville.
Compton's earliest immigrants farmed crops and raised some animals on ranches. To gather firewood, they had to hike to the mountains near Pasadena, California. The whole hike took them almost a week. Many of them wanted to move and settle in a town with a calmer weather. But since Compton was near two general stores, this made many residents stay till it became a bustling community several years later.
By 1887, the settlers made improvements to the local government and held meetings about their town's possible incorporation. One resident donated his land to incorporate Compton. On May 11, 1888, the place was officially a city, but a particular area was designated exclusively for agricultural purposes, and this acreage was called Richland Farms. The city had a starting population of 500 residents. The first city council meeting was held on May 14, 1888.
In the 1950s, Richland Farms attracted families from the rural South. Compton gave new settlers residential lots that came with a barn. They were able to raise a family and earn a living by caring for cattle. It was not a massive agricultural business, but it was enough to provide the residents ample supply of food.
Compton's local airport materialized in the 1920s, and a junior college was also established during this time. A new city hall was constructed on Alameda Street. It was only during the 1950s when Compton started growing rapidly. A high school was finally constructed to accommodate a flourishing student population. For several years, Compton was a highly favored suburb for many middle-class families from Los Angeles because of its wide streets and comfortable family houses.
