Burbank is located in Los Angeles County, California. This city is 12 miles from the downtown Los Angeles. Therefore, it is just a few miles from Hollywood, and this helped Burbank become the media capital of the world. It is home to many media and entertainment companies. The city has two main districts, namely the downtown area at the foot of the Verdugo Mountains and the flatlands. It had 104,447 residents during the 2016 survey.
Burbank was once part of two land grants; one had 36,400 acres while the other had 4,063 acres. The town was named after its founder who purchased 4,600 acres of land from the land grants. This land sat at the base of the Verdugo Mountains in 1867. The founder built a ranch house and grew and harvested wheat. In 1876, the San Fernando Valley where the ranch was located became the biggest wheat center in the county of Los Angeles. A local theater opened in town in 1893, costing around $150,000.
Burbank's settlers had arrived in town during the 1870s and 1880s. The houses built during this time can be found on Olive Avenue, along Cahuenga Pass to Los Angeles. A stagecoach line was the primary mode of transportation for travelers going from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 1858. A railroad company eventually established tracks in the area in 1876. This completed the tracks between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The city's founder sold the right-of-way to the railway company, and the train passed through Burbank for the first time in 1874. The presence of the train attracted the attention of other settlers in California. Burbank experienced population growth during this time. Plots of land were sold off in 1887 by a land company that had taken management of the town. It was also during this time that a water system was established in Burbank. Because of this improved irrigation system, farmers were able to grow orchards and the town's agricultural industry boosted Burbank's economy.
At the same time, because of the railroad, farmers were able to export and sell their crops to various areas in California and the nation. Packing houses and manufacturing facilities were constructed beside the tracks. Eventually, a train depot was completed in Burbank in 1887. One of the town's landowners in the early 20th century was a world-renowned boxer who bought 107 acres where he built a ranch and raised cattle. The ranch home he built was on Victory and Buena Vista Street, but it was later relocated to Buena Park, California.
The first telephone switch in Burbank was established in 1900, which also made it the first in the San Fernando Valley. After five years, there were several telephone exchanges in the town. This produced the valley's first telephone company, which was located in Glendale. In 1908, the town had its first bank on Olive Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard. There were only 300 residents in Burbank at this time, yet the bank had $30,000 in deposits.
