San Diego is known as the second largest city in the state of California and the eighth largest in the entire United States of America. The city has an estimated population of 1,307,402 people and has been branded as "the birth place of California".
San Diego, historically speaking, was the home of the Kumeyaay people. This ethnic culture mainly consists of two groups, the Ipai and Tipai, and can mostly be found in the extreme southwestern part of the United States of America and the northwestern region of Mexico. Spanish explorers arrived in the area in 1542 to find a settlement for a new colony called Alta California.
In 1821, the town became part of the newly independent country of Mexico. That changed in 1850 when San Diego and the rest of California became a part of the United States of America. Some of the city's historic sites can be seen at its parks like the 1,200-acre Balboa Park, which is considered the largest urban cultural park in the Northern part of the United States, even exceeding New York's Central Park in lot area.
Since then, Balboa Park has often been referred to as the "Smithsonian of the West". It houses at least 17 botanical gardens including a lily pond, a Zen garden, and a cactus garden that has been in existence since 1935. San Diego is a large city and has several other parks and recreational facilities spread throughout its many villages or neighborhoods.
San Diego is just a few minutes from Mexico and just 120 miles from the city of Los Angeles. The original town site of this urban area is located at the foot of the Presidio Hill. That area is now called the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, which was first established in 1968. The park serves as a museum for historic houses that were built from the 1820s to the 1870s. Historical landmarks on the park include old residential structures, a smithy, a courthouse, a school, and a museum, among others.
During the 1850s, another land development was planned near the bay area. It was called "New San Diego". Through the years, the pier became a terminus for steamboats and stagecoach lines. A decade later, another community was established in the bayside area. It was called "New Town" and later became Downtown San Diego. After a few years, this became the city's major business district. It experienced ups and downs through the decades, but it underwent a dramatic revival during the 1980s when a new plaza, centers, and parks were constructed and opened to the public.
The city is huge, with a hundred neighborhoods and its boundaries cover 372.39 square miles. San Diego is a mix of high-rise buildings, skyscrapers, bayside houses, suburban communities, and beach towns. According to many magazines and TV programs, San Diego has one of the best climates in the entire country, owing to its geography since it is surrounded by hills, canyons, and mountains and is right next to the San Diego Bay.
