Yorba Linda, CA Tidbits
Just 37 miles and less than an hour from Downtown Los Angeles is the city of Yorba Linda, California. It means "Beautiful Yorba" and was once part of the land grant for Rancho Canon de Santa Ana. A few residential structures were constructed during the 19th century and even now, there are some historic ranch houses still standing at their original location and are considered part of the California Historical Landmark registry.
The first one to call the area "Yorba Linda" was an investment company that sold off parcels of land for other businesses. During the early decade of the 20th century, the area that the company had sold saw an increase in the growing and harvesting of various fruits like oranges and lemons. The area became a prominent grower and producer of citrus fruits even though there were only around 50 residents living in the community.
After a year, however, a telephone line was established in town and a schoolhouse was built after Yorba Linda's population increased due to the positive business and economic developments. In 1912, the town saw several more progresses like the establishment of a post office, a local association for citrus grove owners and merchants, an electricity company, and the Pacific Electric Railway, which helped farmers ship containers of their fruits to other parts of the region and the country.
A year after, the town's chamber of commerce was established. A library was also opened, and the farmers started planting avocado trees. Yorba Linda was growing as an agricultural center that produced many different fruits. Several years later, a museum was built and the local paper started publication. In 1917, the townspeople saw the first paved road, and it was called Yorba Linda Boulevard.
During this time, the community's population remained humble and small. In 1920, there were a little more than 300 people living in Yorba Linda. In the 1960s, though, the population increased to around a thousand people, primarily because the community was still a major agricultural center. Because it was a small town, it was almost annexed by several other cities like Brea in 1958 and even Anaheim in 1963. This prompted the residents to push for Yorba Linda's incorporation, which eventually happened in 1967.
The incorporation subsequently helped the town achieve more progress in terms of businesses, community projects, state matters, and population. Less than two decades after it was incorporated, Yorba Linda had 30,000 residents. In 1990, it had more than 50,000 people living within its city limits. It was during this time that a museum, a library, and a community center were opened. There were also several structures built to commemorate the birthplace of one of the former presidents of the country.
During the early 2000s, Yorba Linda was also considered one of the most affluent cities in the entire country, with a median household income around the $121,000 range. Because of this, many magazines have ranked the city as a great place to live and start a family and career.
