Ventura, CA Tidbits
It is officially known as the city of San Buenaventura, but it is commonly called only "Ventura". It is located along Route 101, between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. With a population of approximately 108,787 people, Ventura became a major retail and residential district. Similar to its nearby cities and towns, San Buenaventura was once inhabited by the Chumash, a Native American people. One of their villages used to be at the foot of Figueroa Street in present-day Ventura.
In 1769, the first Europeans to set foot on the land were from the Portola expedition. They established a structure in San Buenaventura near the Chumash village. The area was named "San Buenaventura", which meant "the city of good fortune". In the 1850s, many settlers bought lands in the area, including railroad magnates. However, the community remained largely rural even after its incorporation in 1866. It took a few more decades for many immigrants to settle in the area, which added to the city's growing population.
During the 1880s, Ventura then had a stable Chinese settlement. The city officials even designated the China Alley Historic Area one of Ventura's points of interest. Later on, the oil industry flourished in the town. This prompted the construction of many buildings like theaters, hotels, and company structures. Because the city was also located between two rivers, Ventura and Santa Clara, many citrus fruits were planted and harvested in the area. Soon after, the auto industry took off and boosted the economic growth of Ventura.
One of the city's prized historical sites is the Ventura Pier, which first opened in 1872. The opening of the Ventura Pier marked the end of the town in isolation. Before the pier was put in place, traders in ships had to disembark from smaller boats that could get them to the shore, but this practice often caused goods to be damaged like heavy logs, since they were hard to carry. They had simply been allowed to drift with the waves until they reached the shore. Most of them made it, but a sizeable portion did not, and that constituted economic loss for the traders.
Soon enough, the Ventura Pier was no longer just used for economic and trade purposes. It was also a huge number of visitors, which helped boost the city's tourism industry. Local families would gather in the pier to catch fish. To this day, the Ventura Pier remains a popular city attraction.
The city's botanical gardens opened in 2012 with a land area of 10.7 acres of lush green fields and colorful flora. The center of the garden features the Grant Park, which has almost 160 species of various plants that mostly come from the Mediterranean.
The park also has pine and eucalyptus trees. The Demonstration Trail can be found in the gardens, too. This is a mile-long walkway that gives a view of ranches, farmlands, and mountains in the distance. The city is also located near Los Padres National Forest, which became accessible after the construction of the Maricopa Highway in the 1930s.
