Torrance, California is situated in an area called South Bay and it has the eighth largest population in the entire Los Angeles County. Torrance is bordered on the south by the communities of the Verdes Palos Verdes Peninsula, on the east by Gardena Harbor Gateway, on the north by Lawndale, and on the southwest by a one-mile beach. The city had 145,438 residents during the latest census.
The city of Torrance is also part of the greater suburban Los Angeles region. It was once part of a land grant that was given to a Spanish family before 1912. The property was mostly an open and dusty unpopulated plain before a real estate developer from Pasadena bought some 2,800 acres in order to create a modern industrial city, which was fulfilled in the early 1910s.
During this time, the community didn't have its own public services and law enforcement consisted of a constable from the Los Angeles who was stationed in Lomita. The area was considered a favorable one by potential residents who wanted to escape the dark fogs and air of the cities. The wind in Torrance almost always blew from the West, which kept the residential regions free of smoke. These days, this wind continually provides residents relief from smog and heat.
Torrance was established in 1912. Initially, the real estate that the community was built upon was intended for industrial use with a residential region for the industrial workers. The region was rich in resources and offered a great potential for development. The real estate industry wasn't embraced as rapidly as some of the other industries in the community. However, it didn't take long for the industry to become successful as soon as petroleum was discovered in the area. This led to the establishment of refineries and companies in Torrance, which, in turn, attracted more residents to the area.
In the 1900s, this new discovery meant a rise in income for the community. This also permitted the expansion of Torrance and brought in new people and workers to the city. This community expanded just as rapidly and the industry grew. It wasn't long before Torrance was one of the larger cities on the West Coast.
The early decades of the 20th century brought a huge economic growth to the city. It became the home of several different companies that took full advantage of the population increase. More entertainment establishments and retail stores were constructed. There was also a high demand for houses and other residential structures. The real estate industry started booming with the population increase and, over the years, continued to be an attractive market.
Torrance is home to several commercial properties and companies, including many light industrial groups and some major retail outlets. Torrance also came to be one of the larger hubs for the distribution of light industrial supplies.
It is also known for manufacturing electronic equipment computers plastics, chemicals, petroleum products, helicopters, and even farm produce. The city is currently home to several headquarters of large corporate companies that are known throughout the country and the world.
