San Clemente, CA Tidbits
The city of San Clemente in California is sometimes called the "Spanish Village by the Sea" because is it known for its Spanish Colonial architectural style, beautiful seaside neighborhoods, mountain views and ocean views. Many residents flocked to it because of its coastal location and because it is situated between two urban areas, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Archeological records show that the first inhabitants of the area were a Native American group called the Juaneno by the Spanish explorers. They called themselves Acjachemen and were the residents of the land until 1776 when Spanish settlers also called the area home. Although the community had residential structures, there were no business establishments. It only started in 1925 when someone from out of town decided to build a bustling business hub in the town.
A former mayor of Seattle, with help from a company, was able to buy 2,000 acres of land in what would someday be San Clemente. This purchase resulted in a flock of tourists who wanted to experience the beach and mild climate away from the big concrete cities. The city was named "San Clemente" after the San Clemente Islands located in the southern area of California's Channel Islands.
Public structures like plazas and parks were built to attract tourists and new residents during the early decades of the 1900s. Eventually, San Clemente was incorporated as a city in 1928. After its incorporation, the construction of several public service buildings and offices were started. The first one to be built was a structure for the fire station. Now, the city has three fire stations.
Towards the end of the 1960s, a former president of the United States bought property on the area and established a vacation house in San Clemente. The early Spanish settlers left an architectural impact on the city. Many of its buildings were created using the Mediterranean Renaissance style, with red tile roofs, dark wooden doors and windows, and light-colored stucco walls.
As a coastal city, San Clemente is also known for its large waves. Because of this, the city is considered the "Surfing Media Capital of the World". Many publications about surfing have established their headquarters and offices in this city. There are also many surfboard manufacturers in San Clemente.
The city has one high school, six elementary schools, and three middle schools served by the Capistrano Unified School District. San Clemente has also been featured in several TV shows and programs. The city has also been called home by several notable professional athletes, musicians, and actors.
During the 2010 census, the city of San Clemente had 63,522 residents. The most recent survey, however, revealed that the city now has 66,245 people living within San Clemente's 18.45 square miles of land. It has sister cities in Argentina and has a relatively high median household income at $102,340. The city's unemployment rate is low, at just 3.7 percent, making San Clemente a community of generally well-off residents with high-salaried jobs. The city also has 25 parks, four swimming pools, and six recreational centers for its residents' amusement.
