Aside from Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, there is another beach city in the South Bay region of the greater Los Angeles. It is the city of Redondo Beach, which has its own performing arts center, fifteen parks, thirteen pocket parks, two public libraries, and police and fire department.
The oldest settlers of the Redondo Beach were the Chowigna Indians. Redondo Beach used to be a section of the Rancho San Pedro land grant during the 18th century. More than 200 acres of the Rancho San Pedro were sold during the 1780s. The purchased land soon birthed the town of Redondo Beach. According to the 2010 census report, the city had 66,748 residents. It is an increase from the previous record of 63,261 people.
Now, Redondo Beach is one best resort destinations in the entire state. It has popular beaches, various Mediterranean resorts, and a famous pier. The city uses the Beach Cities Transit (BCT), which are considered environment friendly by the federal government.
The Redondo Beach Pier, or popularly known as "The Pier", is the city's most prominent landmark. It was the first of many piers, wharfs, and harbors. The 70,000-square-foot Pier took eight months to complete and is the last landmark representing the 1880s. It sits 25 feet above water and it is the largest "endless" pier on the California Coast. The Redondo Beach Pier continues to attract visitors from different parts of the world.
The Redondo Beach Public Library, the Women's Club of Redondo Beach, the Sweetser Residence, and the Redondo Beach Original Town Site are four properties of the city that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Sweetser Residence and the Women's Club were built in 1921 and 1922 respectively. The Old Town Site contains 44 residential buildings bordered by Diamond and Carnelian Streets, Guadalupe and Francisca Avenues.
Originally built in 1930, The Redondo Beach Public Library is now a focal point of a local park. From 1909 to 1917, the library settled in the west wing of the city hall. Redondo Beach's Chamber of Commerce proposed that a library should be built near a local park. Finally, in July 1930, the library opened to the public. It is included in the list of the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
A new library was constructed in 2009 and officially opened the following year. The new North Branch of the Redondo Beach Public Library is the first green building of the city and it received a "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" award.
Most of the city's schools are operated by the Redondo Beach Unified School District. The Redondo Union High School serves as the city's zone secondary school. It's located right next to the Redondo Shores High School and the Redondo Union High School. The city has two middles schools and eight elementary schools. There is one private learning academy in Redondo Beach for students from grades 9 to 12.
Redondo Beach has sister cities in different parts of the world, with two cities in Mexico, one in Japan, and one more in China. The Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches are also Redondo Beach's sister cities and all three is connected by a long shoreline. Redondo Beach was once called the "Gem of the Continent" in 1887 by a Los Angeles publication.
