After Mexico was able to win freedom from Spain, many Mexicans were granted land in what is now the state of California. One of these lands was Irvine, a city that was once comprised of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, Rancho San Joaquin, and Rancho Lomas de Santiago. In 1864, the owner of the Rancho San Joaquin sold 50,000 acres of his land to four people. After 1878, a land development company was able to obtain the rest of the ranch lands. On this area, farmers were able to grow and harvest olive, citrus, and other crops.
In 1888, the Santa Fe Railroad established a line to Fallbrook Junction. It passed through one small town that served as a train depot. The railway company named the community that formed there "Myford". However, in 1914, the town's name was changed to "Irvine".
In the mid-1900s, a new town was designed and that it, too, would be named "Irvine", with the old town bearing the title "East Irvine". The latter is now a neighborhood in the city of Irvine, which had more than 50,000 residents during its incorporation in 1971.
With a 2016 population of 258,386 residents, the city of Irvine is a popular city in Orange County, California. As a master-planned city, it has many notable parks, facilities, and establishments that offer education, recreation, and entertainment.
