Q: Does thickness matter in memory foam mattresses?

Perhaps the biggest sign that your mattress has gone bad is you’re consistently waking up sore and tired. If you’re an adult sleeping 7 to 9 hours, you should be waking up refreshed and ready to tackle your day. Similarly, you might struggle to fall asleep if your mattress is no longer supportive or otherwise uncomfortable. Even if you’re getting a decent night’s rest, your mattress may not feel comfortable anymore. If your bed has developed lumps or has spots where you sink in, it’s time to replace it with a new mattress. Yes, the thickness can determine the bed’s durability and tell you how soft or firm it likely feels. As a rule of thumb, we don’t recommend memory foam mattresses under 10 inches thick. Memory foam mattresses under 10 inches may have a thin comfort layer that goes flat within a few short years or a thin support layer that’s quick to wear out. Thinner memory foam mattresses also often lack a sturdy-enough base layer to withstand years (or even decades) of use.

Mattress size is an important consideration when choosing a new bed. If you buy something too small, you won’t have enough room to get comfortable. But if you buy something too big, it may make your bedroom feel cramped.

To make the shopping process easier, we break down each mattress size and who they’re recommended for below.

Twin

Dimensions: 38 inches by 75 inches
Twin size mattresses are the classic children’s bed, but many adults can comfortably sleep on one as well. They’re an excellent fit for sleepers who have a limited budget or bedroom space.

Twin XL

Dimensions 38 inches by 80 inches
A twin XL mattress is well-suited for many taller adults who want a compact or inexpensive mattress. A twin XL is often the smallest mattress that can fit on an adjustable bed.

Full

Dimensions: 54 inches by 75 inches
Full size mattresses are perfect for single sleepers who like to lounge and sprawl. A full mattress gives the appearance of being a big bed while still fitting well in a smaller bedroom. Still, we don’t recommend them for couples, only solo sleepers.

Queen

Dimensions: 60 inches by 80 inches
When it comes to mattress sizes, it’s the queen size that tends to reign supreme. It’s the most popular bed size because of its universal nature. A single adult can stretch out, while couples have room to move around too.

King

Dimensions: 76 inches by 80 inches
A king size can make any large master bedroom feel complete. On a king, two sleepers will have the same amount of personal space a twin XL mattress provides; so, partners won't bump into each other but can still stay close.

California King

Dimensions: 72 inches by 84 inches
Some sleepers are too tall to rest comfortably even on a king size mattress. If you’re over 6 feet tall, a California king size mattress may suit you better.

Split King

Dimensions: 76 inches by 80 inches total, composed of two halves each measuring 38 inches by 80 inches
Split king mattresses are the perfect way for couples to customize their comfort. Different firmnesses can be paired together because the bed is technically two separate twin XL mattresses placed side-by-side. The size also pairs well with an adjustable bed, letting each partner set the bed in their preferred position.

How do you keep a mattress from the Amerisleep Cloverleaf mattress store from sagging?

The best way to ensure your new mattress doesn’t sag is to keep it on a supportive, even surface. We recommend a surface with slats no more than 3 inches apart.

If you don’t have a proper bed frame for your mattress, the floor can be a temporary place to set your bed. However, we don’t recommend the floor as a place to keep your mattress permanently. A mattress on the floor is exposed to more dust, dirt, and pests and faces a higher risk of mold growth.

Will a soft mattress from the Amerisleep mattress store near Cloverleaf cause back pain?

Our soft mattresses won’t cause back pain if they’re suited for your sleeping style. We normally recommend our AS4 and AS5 mattresses for side sleepers only.

Back and stomach sleepers might misalign their spines if they sleep on a soft mattress. Instead, we recommend our AS1 and AS2 for firm support and our AS3 mattress for those who want a medium firmness level.

How often do you rotate a hybrid mattress from the Amerisleep Cloverleaf mattress store?

Our hybrid mattresses should be rotated about every 3 to 6 months, same as our memory foam mattresses. Rotating a mattress ensures you’re not wearing down the bed in one spot night after night, promoting a longer-lasting mattress.

Remember, only rotate your Amerisleep mattress, do not flip it. Flipping one of our hybrid mattresses can compromise its support and comfort.

Are box springs obsolete?

Box springs are still useful if you’re buying a traditional innerspring mattress, but we do not recommend using a box spring with any of our beds. A box spring’s interior coils are spaced too far apart to support a memory foam or hybrid mattress—when placed on a box spring, parts of the mattress can sag between the box spring’s coils, causing the mattress to lose its shape.

Even a high-quality foam or hybrid mattress can sag prematurely if improperly supported, forcing you to replace your mattress earlier than you’re ready to.

The time it takes for an unboxed mattress to snap back into shape varies. An Amerisleep mattress is ready for you to sleep on after a few minutes and usually completely expands within 8 hours. However, a memory foam mattress with lower-quality foams may take several days to finish expanding.
