Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best time to buy a mattress?

If you miss out on the Memorial Day mattress sales or you’re just not quite ready to buy a new mattress yet, there are plenty of other opportunities during the year. The best mattress deals are typically during the following weekends:

  • The 4th of July
  • Presidents Day
  • Black Friday
  • Cyber Monday
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
How do I find the best mattress?

Top-rated mattresses easily pop up when you do a quick Google search, but how do you know those mattresses will be the best for you? The truth is, you don’t—you’ll need to invest a little more time to find the right one. However, with all the mattress choices out there, it won’t be too hard to snag the best mattress for your comfort needs.

Before you purchase, consider your preferred sleeping position, budget, your partner’s sleep preferences (if applicable), and if you want a mattress with special features, such as cooling gel foam, pocket coils, or edge support.

Sleeping Position

Everyone has a preferred sleeping position, but most people switch between at least two different sleeping styles during the night (known as combo sleeping). Arguably, the way you sleep has the biggest impact on your mattress choice, since it affects the overall feel of the mattress, and by extension, your sleep quality.

Side Sleeping

Sleeping on your side is the healthiest way to sleep, and it’s also the most common. But if side-sleepers choose a mattress that’s too firm, that could mean numbness, shoulder pain, and hip misalignment down the road. To avoid any of those issues, we recommend side sleepers choose a medium, medium-soft, or soft mattress.

Amerisleep has a mattress in each of these firmnesses, and the medium-soft and soft models (the AS4 and AS5, respectively) are the most popular choices among side sleepers.

Back Sleeping

Back sleepers sleep with their backs completely flush with the mattress, so they need one that won’t sink down too far, misaligning the spine, shoulders, or hips. To avoid back pain, most back sleepers prefer a firm or medium-firm bed. A plush mattress could cause you to feel “stuck” or trapped in the bed, leading to more pain. We recommend the AS1 or AS2 for dedicated back sleepers.

Stomach Sleeping

We don’t recommend sleeping face down because it comes with the highest risk of misalignment and back pain. If you’re stuck in the habit of sleeping on your stomach, choose a firm or medium-firm mattress—anything softer and you run the risk of waking up with pain. Stomach sleepers should lean towards the firmer AS1 and AS2 models.

Budget and Value

Your budget is, of course, a major factor as you decide which mattress to buy. Not all mattresses are created equal, and higher-priced models can be just as low-quality as some cheap mattresses. How do you know if you’re getting your money’s worth? Consider the mattress type, the sleep trial and warranty, and even the brand’s reputation.

Remember: the price you pay for your mattress should reflect how long it lasts. You would expect a mattress costing upwards of $3,000 to last 10-20 years, but most luxury beds in that price range break down after only 5-7 years because they’re made of cheap materials marketed as “luxury,” such as “icy cool gel,” or “gold threads.”

To reconcile all the different marketing tactics with an actual good-quality mattress, pay close attention to the materials and company policies. Some indications that a mattress will be a good investment are:

  • The mattress contains CertiPUR-US® foams and has other certifications such as OEKO-Tex, Greenguard Gold, or USDA Organic
  • The mattress comes with a generous warranty (10 years or longer)
  • The aforementioned warranty will cover repairs for sags 1.5 inches deep (any deeper and the mattress will probably cause you pain)
  • If the mattress contains coils (like innersprings and hybrids), the coils are individually wrapped in fabric to maintain a longer lifespan and prevent sagging

*There are two types of natural latex: Dunlop and Talalay. Talalay is processed with chemicals to give it a softer feel, while Dunlop has no added chemicals and is firmer. Dunlop Latex has been known to last up to 15 years

Company Policies

The sleep trial and warranties included with most bed in a box mattresses can give you a sense of the mattress’s quality. The standard mattress warranty lasts 10 years—we do not recommend a mattress with a warranty shorter than that, because the average mattress lifespan is 7-10 years. Amerisleep offers a 20-year prorated warranty with every mattress, and it protects against sags 1.5 inches or deeper.

Sleep trials go hand-in-hand with beds in a box. Since bed in a box customers lose the experience of trying out mattresses in-store before buying, a sleep trial gives them the option to sleep on the bed for 3 months (sometimes more), and then return it for a full refund if needed.

Is it better to buy a mattress online or in store?

It used to be that you could only buy mattresses in a showroom after trying different styles and models out for a few minutes. Now with the advent of bed in a box mattresses, you can get your favorite mattress shipped straight to your door. Both buying experiences have their pros and cons:

How much does a good mattress cost?

This is a no-brainer, but sticking to a budget is the easiest way to ensure you don't stray outside of your set parameters to a mattress you can't afford, even if it's on sale. To give you a better perspective of mattress pricing, let's go over what influences how much a mattress costs.

  • Brand name: If the brand you're buying from has been around for awhile, the mattress may cost more. Additionally, if the brand is well-known and has an established reputation, that could increase the cost. Read customer reviews on the website and the company's profile on the Better Business Bureau (if one is available).
  • Eco-friendly or organic materials: If buying a mattress made with organic materials is a priority to you, be prepared to pay a little extra. Remember that "eco-friendly" can mean a few different things—the mattress could have been manufactured using low-emissions or low-waste methods, or the mattress materials themselves are organic or eco-friendly (such as natural latex or organic cotton).
  • Warranties and sleep trials: The company policies attached to the mattress may affect the price. If they offer a lengthy sleep trial and/or a generous warranty, that is likely included in the price.
How do I know it's time for a new mattress?

There are a few telltale signs you can spot when it's time to replace your old mattress:

  • Sagging below 1.5 inches or more
  • Rips or tears in the foam or pillow top
  • Broken coils, burst coils, coils that don't spring back
  • Loss of support and responsiveness
  • Musty odor
  • You wake up in pain
  • You sleep better on another mattress
What is the best mattress type?

More important than knowing the ins and outs of mattress deals is knowing which mattress is best for you. After all, nobody wants to end up with an uncomfortable bed even if it was marked down significantly. Refer to this table when deciding on the right mattress for your needs.

How do I get the best deal on a mattress?

Before you make a mattress purchase, make sure you’ve laid out parameters for what you want in your mattress. Special features like gel memory foam or edge support can hike up the cost, but if those features are absolute musts for you, factor that into your budget. Even with extra comfort features, you can still get a high-quality mattress at a reasonable price. And with the Memorial Day deals available this weekend, you’re sure to snag a good bargain.
