Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about our Amerisleep Mattress Foundation.

Is a foundation necessary? Or can I use an Amerisleep mattress with a platform bed?

You do not need a foundation with your mattress, as many mattresses can be placed directly on the floor, but we do recommend them. Placing your mattress directly on the floor can lead to dirt and moisture build-up, resulting in premature wear and tear. Plus, it makes it hard for air to escape, which can lead to night sweats and overheating.

While box springs were once popular, they’re now a less desirable option, as they’re not compatible with foam beds. Foam beds need a solid or slatted foundation to rest on, so they work best with more modern mattress foundations or even bed frames like platform beds. Hybrid mattresses are also best supported by solid or slatted foundations, whereas innerspring mattresses can work with box springs or modern mattress foundations.

What is the difference between a mattress foundation and box spring?

Box springs provide bouncy, sturdy support for your mattress through a combination of coils and wood slats. Mattress foundations are either slatted or solid and do not contain coils, so they provide more even support than box springs.

Box springs are best suited for innerspring mattresses, whereas all other mattress types are best supported by more modern mattress foundations.

Can I put a mattress directly on slats?

You can put a mattress directly on a slatted foundation or bed base, but you’ll want to make sure the slats are close enough together to provide even support. As a general rule of thumb, slats in a slatted foundation should be no more than 3 inches apart.

If your slats are spaced further apart, we recommend two solutions: 1) buy additional slats to fill the gaps or 2) buy a bunkie board to place across the slats, creating a solid, flat surface. You can also opt to buy moisture-resistant ply-wood instead of a bunkie board.

What are the dimensions of the Amerisleep Mattress Foundation?

The dimensions of the Amerisleep Mattress Foundation vary with each foundation size. Below, we provide a breakdown:

  • Twin — 38" x 74" x 8.5"
  • Twin XL — 38" x 80" x 13.5"
  • Full — 54" x 75" x 8.5"
  • Queen — 60" x 80" x 13.5"
  • King — 76" x 80" x 13.5"
  • California King — 72" x 84" x 13.5"

Do you need a headboard for mattress foundation?

You do not need a headboard with a mattress foundation as many of them are stand-alone mattress accessories. Our Amerisleep Mattress Foundation is not compatible with a headboard, either.

Foundations can be used in place of a box spring or set down within an open bed frame to offer support—if you have a bed frame with a headboard you’d like to continue using, you can pair one of these accessories with your current frame.

Does the Amerisleep Foundation have a weight limit?

We recommend placing no more than 600 pounds on our Amerisleep Foundation.
