Amerisleep Bio-Pur® vs Traditional Memory Foam

Breathable & Cooling

Unlike the dense construction of traditional memory foam, Bio-Pur®'s large, open-cell structure has a few distinct advantages:

  • Allows air to flow freely
  • Prevents heat build-up
  • Perfect for hot sleepers

Responsive & Supportive

With traditional memory foam, the slow response time can feel like you're sleeping in quicksand. This leads to discomfort and poor spinal alignment. Here's how Bio-Pur® is different:

  • Contours to your body
  • Relieves painful pressure points
  • Provides cushioning and support
  • Bounces back in just seconds

Eco-Friendly Materials

While traditional memory foam is 100% petroleum-based, Bio-Pur® is partially made with renewable plant-based oils. This minimizes our reliance on non-renewable resources and ensures our products are better for you and the planet.

Eco-Friendly Materials
A Healthier Sleep

A Healthier Sleep

Many memory foams you see today use harsh chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde, and more that can cause unpleasant off-gassing.

Bio-Pur®, on the other hand, is:

  • CertiPUR-US® certified
  • Low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew
  • Made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, prohibited phthalates, PBDEs, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals

Decades of Durability

Most memory foams only last 7 to 10 years. Some deteriorate within 3 to 5 years. Longer lifespans are only available in higher-end memory foam.

We build our mattresses to last. With Bio-Pur®, you get:

  • An industry-leading 20-year warranty
  • Protection against indentations and sagging

Types of memory foam mattresses

  • Traditional Memory Foam

    Traditional Memory Foam

You're probably familiar with traditional memory foam. Not only is it found in mattresses, but it's also in car seats, medical equipment, and furniture. It could even be in the couch you're sitting on.

Traditional memory foam is made using petroleum. Petroleum gives memory foam its responsive, soft feel. Even plant-based foams contain some petroleum, known as polyurethane. While it's not harmful, polyurethane and other chemical fillers can cause irritation and breathing problems for some people, so look for CertiPUR-US® certified memory foam. CertiPUR-US® certified foam contains no PBDEs, ozone depleters, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, phthalates, and more.

  • Plant-Based Memory Foam

    Plant-Based Memory Foam

Plant-based foam contains polyurethane, but a portion of that chemical is replaced with plant-based oils. This is done to make the foam more breathable, reduce the off-gassing smell, and increase the foam's responsiveness – and it's part of what makes our Bio-Pur® layer so popular among sleepers.

  • Cooling Memory Foam

    Cooling Memory Foam

Cooling memory foam uses either open-cell design for a more breathable material or additives such as charcoal, gel, graphite, or copper. There are a lot of different ways you can improve the cooling quality of a mattress, but for an eco-friendly product, our Bio-Pur® foam outperforms the competition.

Memory Foam Mattress Frequently Asked Questions

Is a memory foam mattress good for back pain?

Yes, memory foam mattresses are excellent for back pain. Memory foam can mold to the body and respond quickly to changes in position. The right memory foam mattress cradles you, easing pressure across the body that builds up into pain.

However, you want to choose the right firmness for your sleep style. If you don’t, and you end up with a too-soft or too-firm mattress, it can increase the risk of morning back pain.

Is a memory foam mattress good for side sleepers?

Yes, memory foam is a good material for side sleepers, who need a bed that cushions their shoulders and hips. If they do not receive adequate pressure relief to these sensitive areas, then their chances of sore hips and shoulders in the morning increase.

Side sleepers searching for a conforming material made without synthetic materials might want to consider a latex foam mattress, such as our Organica bed.

What's the Best Memory Foam Mattress for Me?

Choosing the right memory foam mattress really comes down to two things: reflecting on your sleep style and considering your body weight. Memory foam beds come in a whole range of firmness options, so once you find a brand you like, you can narrow down your choice based on the firmness level you need to sleep soundly.

When deciding upon firmness, first think about the way you like to sleep and the support your sleep position requires. Back and stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress with extra support under the lumbar section to keep the spine in a neutral position, whereas side sleepers need a mattress with a little more cushioning to relieve pressure under the shoulders and hips. So, if you like to sleep on your back or stomach, you’ll enjoy a medium-firm or firm mattress, and if you’re a side or combo sleeper, you’ll prefer medium and soft beds.

To further narrow down the right firmness, take into account your body type. Sleepers over 250 pounds usually want to go a little firmer than what’s recommended for their sleep style so they receive adequate lift and support. On the other hand, petite sleepers less than 130 pounds will want to choose something softer than the norm so they receive adequate comfort and pressure relief.

Once you’ve landed on your ideal firmness level, it will be easy to choose the best memory foam mattress that will deliver comfy sleep. However, if there are other features you want in a mattress, like cooling tech or plant-based foam, you’ll want to look at the specific materials and layer construction between models to determine the right match.

What makes Amerisleep’s memory foam mattresses special?

From cover-to-core, our memory foam mattresses are tirelessly engineered to deliver better sleep for a better tomorrow. With over a decade of innovation and design, we’ve developed our plant-based Bio-Pur®, supportive HIVE®, and long-lasting Bio-Core® layers to help you get the sleep you deserve. How is Bio-Pur® different from traditional memory foam?

Bio-Pur® is the healthier upgrade to traditional memory foam. It blends breathability, comfort, responsiveness, and support to help you get your best night’s sleep yet. Unlike traditional memory foam which traps heat, causes you to sink into the mattress and feel stuck, and may leave your spine in awkward alignment, Bio-Pur®’s unique open-cell design is cooling, rebounds in seconds, and keeps you lifted while you sleep. It also uses plant-based materials making it a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional memory foam.

How much are Amerisleep memory foam mattresses?

Currently, all Amerisleep mattresses are available for 30% off. After the discount, our queen size memory foam mattresses range from $899 to $1470. You can save more on smaller sizes or upgrade to a King or California King. Best of all? Every Amerisleep mattress comes with free shipping within the lower 48 states, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 20-year warranty.

Where can I purchase an Amerisleep memory foam mattress?

Amerisleep mattresses are available online and come with free shipping and free returns with our 100-night sleep trial within the lower 48 states. You can even shop our mattresses at any of our retail locations in Arizona, Colorado, Texas, or Oregon. Overseas, you can find Amerisleep memory foam mattresses in Australia and South Korea too.

Where are Amerisleep's memory foam mattresses made?

Amerisleep mattresses are proudly made in the USA. Using the most advanced manufacturing processes, our memory foam is also certified by CertiPUR-US®. You can shop online or in-stores and get free, no contact delivery straight to your door on all orders within the continental U.S.

How long does a memory foam mattress last?

This largely depends on the foam density and construction, but the average lifespan for a good quality memory foam mattress is 7-8 years. On the other hand, Amerisleep memory foam mattresses are guaranteed to last with our 20-year warranty covering manufacturing defects and sagging over ¾ of an inch.

What happens if you sleep on a memory foam mattress before 24 hours?

Nothing should happen if you sleep on your mattress before 24 hours, as it’s built to withstand years of wear and tear. The worst you can expect is that your mattress won’t be as comfortable as it would be after fully expanding.

How long does it take for a memory foam mattress to inflate?

Most memory foam mattresses finish expanding within 24 to 72 hours—higher quality foams tend to expand faster. If your mattress has not reached its full shape within a week, it’s likely defective and you should contact customer service.

Can you fix a sagging memory foam mattress?

Once your memory foam mattress begins to sag, there’s no real way to fix it. You can buy mattress toppers to extend the life of your bed a little bit, but these will eventually begin to sag in the same spots your mattress is sagging. If your mattress has sags or visible indentations, it’s time for a new bed.

How can you keep cool on a memory foam mattress?

Many modern memory foam mattresses are built with cooling technologies to prevent heat retention and promote more comfortable sleep. You can also help yourself sleep cooler by buying breathable bedding, such as cotton or Tencel® sheets, and pairing your mattress with a slatted foundation. Slatted foundations allow heat to escape out of the bottom of the mattress, further preventing night sweats.

How thick should my memory foam mattress be?

Memory foam mattresses should be at least 10 inches thick. Mattresses thinner than 10 inches are more likely to break down and show signs of sagging sooner. Plus, ultra-thin mattresses tend to feel quite firm, so they’re not a great option for side sleepers and those who prefer a little cushion from their bed.

How do you clean a memory foam mattress?

Washing your bedding frequently prevents dust mites and allergens from accumulating on the surface of your mattress, as does regular vacuuming. To freshen up your mattress you can sprinkle baking soda on top and leave it for a few hours before vacuuming it up—some people sprinkle it on before leaving for work and vacuum it up once they get home.

Can you compress and pack a memory foam mattress?

No, as you may damage the foam by compressing it at home. Mattress companies have specialized machines to compress and pack a mattress without damaging it. Attempting to re-compress your mattress at home can damage the foam layers and structural integrity of the bed.

Do memory foam mattresses work with adjustable bed frames?

Yes, memory foam mattresses work well with adjustable bases as they’re flexible enough to move with the base. Spring mattresses may not work as well as an all-foam mattress—the motor of an adjustable base can strain itself trying to move a firm innerspring mattress.
