Frequently asked questions

Is it OK to place an Amerisleep mattress on the floor?

No, keeping your Amerisleep mattress on the floor will void its warranty. This is because leaving a mattress on the floor can negatively impact its longevity. The floor increases the likelihood of pests, dust, and mold spores infiltrating your mattress, all of which can compromise its materials.

Keeping a mattress on the floor can also impact how it feels, with the floor giving it a firmer feel. Plus, many older sleepers may find it hard to rise to a stand from a floor mattress.

Can I use an Amerisleep mattress with a box spring?

No, we do not recommend using an Amerisleep mattress with a box spring. The classic box spring was designed to support a traditional innerspring mattress only, with the box spring's coils meant to line up with the spring mattress's coil and deepen its bouncy support and comfort.

However, these interior coils that make up a box spring do not create the consistent support that an Amerisleep mattress needs. Parts of our mattresses can dip between the box spring's coils, pulling the bed out of shape and creating unwanted “soft spots” on the mattress’s surface.

Can I put an Amerisleep mattress directly on slats?

Yes, you can place an Amerisleep mattress directly on metal or wood slats without affecting the mattress's comfort and support. We only advise making sure the slats are thick enough and wide enough for sag-free support, with no more than 2.75 inches between the slats. Too-wide spaces leave room for the mattress to dip between the slats, causing premature loss of support.

However, slats that are not covered in non-skid upholstery may let your mattress slide out of place.

Do you need airflow under a mattress?

Yes, airflow through the base of a mattress can improve its comfort and longevity. When a mattress is placed on a solid surface like a piece of plywood or a bunkie board, moisture and heat can become trapped in the mattress’s bottom. Airflow helps absorbed body heat and moisture droplets escape, preventing the warm and damp conditions that allow mold to grow.

Air may still flow through the sides and top of the mattress to let the bed breathe, but for full protection, a slatted surface is best.

What is the weight limit for the Amerisleep Foundation?

We recommend placing no more than 750 pounds on our foundation.

Do I need a foundation underneath an Amerisleep mattress?

Yes, a strong and sturdy foundation is crucial for maintaining the condition of your Amerisleep mattress. A foundation keeps the mattress elevated and away from any insects, dust bunnies, mold spores, and other allergens and irritants that can settle within your bed.

A foundation doesn’t just maintain a bed’s support but also its comfort, helping the mattress keep its shape after years of use. Plus, the added height that a foundation provides typically makes it easier for a sleeper to slide out of bed in the morning.

What is the difference between a box spring and the Amerisleep foundation?

Box springs are essentially wooden boxes with steel coils inside, as the name suggests, with a fabric cover encasing the wooden frame. However, an Amerisleep foundation or platform bed relies on slats for airy support. These slats overall have a longer expected lifespan than the coils inside a box spring, which can sag and lose support within a handful of years.

The traditional box spring was also only designed with one mattress type in mind, the classic innerspring mattress. Meanwhile, our Amerisleep foundation was constructed to suit any type of mattress with a nearly uniform surface from the closely spaced slats. Air can easily slip between the slats and whisk away any absorbed heat and moisture for cool, dry comfort.

A box spring is not meant to be used on its own and is instead designed to slip inside a bed frame, so that’s potentially another accessory you would still need to buy. However, the Amerisleep mattress foundation is engineered to offer stand-alone support, so you won’t need to buy a separate bed frame.

Foundations typically need to be put together, while a box spring is sold as a put-together product. However, the Amerisleep foundation comes with no-hassle, tool-free assembly, requiring only a few minutes of setup.

Does the Amerisleep Foundation include a sleep trial?

No. Mattress accessories, such as sheets, pillows, and foundations, do not qualify for the 100-night trial and are non-returnable.
