Our Top Amazon Mattress Recommendation

The Amerisleep AS3 is the best mattress option available on Amazon. The medium feel of our AS3 model is perfect for most sleepers because of the breathable, body-contouring Bio-Pur®, responsive Affinity with the even pressure relief of HIVE® technology, and the durable, firm base of Bio-Core®. All foam layers are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Why Choose an Amerisleep Mattress?

Each of our mattress models contains layers of breathable and responsive foam. The Amerisleep AS3 has a lightweight, breathable cover, plant-based Bio-Pur®, the Affinity layer with HIVE® technology, and the supportive Bio-Core®.

Bio-Pur®

During the manufacturing process, we partially replace petroleum with castor oil to produce a memory foam that’s more breathable and more responsive than traditional memory foam. Sleepers won’t feel “stuck” inside the mattress and instead will find it easier to switch between sleep positions. Bio-Pur® conforms to the body and relieves pressure points, particularly in the shoulders and hips. Since it’s more breathable than traditional foam, there’s little risk of overheating.

Affinity with HIVE®

Affinity acts as the transitional layer between the comforting feel of Bio-Pur® and supportive Bio-Core®. Affinity incorporates HIVE® technology— hundreds of hexagonal-shaped segments that form a 5-zone system with softer support under the shoulders and hips and firmer support for the head, back, and legs. HIVE® technology provides sleepers with even pressure relief throughout the body.

Bio-Core®

Bio-Core® is the stable support layer of all our mattress models. Bio-Core® is a firm foam base, designed to evenly distribute weight across the sleep surface and ensure a long-lasting mattress that won’t sag.

100-Night Sleep Trial

With the purchase of each of our mattresses, we include a 100-night sleep trial, where customers can try out the AS3 in the comfort of their own home. If you aren’t satisfied with the mattress after 30 nights, we’ll issue a full refund. If you find the AS3 is not for you and would like to try one of our other models, you can do so— the sleep trial will renew once you receive your new mattress.

20-Year Warranty

Each of our mattress models comes with a 20-year warranty, one of the best in the mattress industry. Our warranty covers any manufacturing defects and flaws which could cause potential damage to the mattress, and also covers sagging greater than an inch.

During the first 10 years of the warranty, we will repair or replace the mattress, free of charge to the customer. In the last 10 years, we will choose to either repair or replace the mattress at a prorated charge to the customer.

Benefits of Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is an exclusive membership offered through Amazon. Prime members can enjoy perks like free two-day shipping. Priced at $12.99 a month, many Amazon members feel the membership is well worth the cost.

How to Choose the Best Amazon Mattress

Amazon offers many bed in a box mattresses, which are rolled up inside a box and shipped directly to the customer. Once free of packaging, the mattress automatically expands to its original shape.

These types of online mattresses are available at low prices because online mattress brands cut out salesmen and rented retail space costs.

To choose the best mattress, look at mattress type, price, verified customer reviews, and available sleep trials, warranties, and return policies. Also, consider your body weight and preferred sleep position for the best comfort and support.

Mattress Types

Each mattress type offers sleepers their own unique feel, from the bounciness of an innerspring to the contouring of memory foam.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is one of the most popular mattress types on the market today. A memory foam mattress responds to heat and pressure, conforming to the body’s natural curves and relieving pressure points. Generally, a memory foam mattress contains a comfort layer of memory foam and a support layer of high-density foam. Some memory foam mattresses include a poly-foam transitional layer.

Because of its dense structure, memory foam runs the risk of overheating, but choosing a memory foam bed with cooling features helps reduce this risk. Cooling features include breathable, plant-based memory foam, heat-absorbing, cooling gel memory foam, and copper and graphite-infused memory foam.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are more common and well-known for their bouncy surface. An innerspring mattress also provides cooling through the open structure of innerspring coils and better edge support than other mattress types. An innerspring mattress has a thin fiberfill or foam layer (usually in the form of a pillow top) and a support layer of steel coils.

Unlike other mattress types, innerspring beds have little to no motion isolation and more noise potential from steel coils. They also provide little to no pressure relief, but adding a mattress topper can help relieve pressure points.

Latex

Latex comes in two different forms— synthetic and natural. Synthetic latex is created through a chemical process, while natural latex is made from rubber tree sap. Dunlop is 100% pure latex, a dense and durable material. While Talalay is also made of natural latex, it contains polyurethane fillers for its signature soft feel. A typical latex mattress contains a top layer of latex and a base layer of either high-density foam or latex.

A latex mattress is similar to memory foam— conforming pressure relief with excellent motion isolation, however, latex sleeps cooler and has a responsive bounce. A drawback to a latex mattress is its high price point, depending on if the bed contains natural latex.

Hybrid

A hybrid mattress combines pressure-relieving memory foam with the responsive bounce of innerspring coils. Hybrids provide the benefits of both memory foam and innersprings— the contouring and motion isolation from memory foam, and the cooling and edge support from innerspring coils.

With the benefits come the drawbacks, including less pressure relief and noise potential from innerspring coils and overheating from memory foam. A hybrid mattress contains a comfort layer of memory foam or latex (at least 2 inches thick) and a support layer of pocketed coils— to be a true hybrid, the bed must have at least two inches of foam with a coiled support layer.

Body Weight

Body weight is a major factor to consider before purchasing a bed on Amazon. Body weight may decide which firmness level will offer you the best balance of comfort and support. Body weight is divided into three categories— light, average, and plus-size.

Light

Light sleepers weigh less than 130 pounds. They need a softer surface to allow their bodies to gently sink into the mattress for conforming pressure relief.

Average

Average sleepers weigh between 130 pounds and 230 pounds. A medium feel is the best for a nice balance of comfort and support.

Plus-Size

Plus-size sleepers weigh more than 230 pounds. The best mattresses for heavy people are firmer, as a firm surface provides contouring and support without the risk of sagging.

Sleeping Position

Your preferred sleep position is another factor to consider before purchasing a mattress on Amazon. Each sleep position needs a specific balance of comfort and support to fill in the gaps between the body and the sleep surface, to relieve pressure points and prevent sagging.

Side Sleeping

Side sleeping is the most common and healthiest sleep position. Benefits of side sleeping include better breathing, reduced acid reflux, and less pressure on vital organs. The best mattresses for side sleepers are medium in firmness because they provide a plush surface and extra cushioning to the shoulders and hips (the heaviest sections of the body) to relieve pressure points. To further keep the spine in alignment, side sleepers can place a pillow between the knees to prevent twisting their lower back.

Back Sleeping

Back sleeping is another healthy sleep position— lying on the back naturally aligns the spine because of the back’s direct contact with the surface. Sleeping on the back does have snoring potential and carries a risk of developing sleep apnea— when gravity causes the collapse of soft tissue at the back of the throat or the tongue falls back, obstructing the airways.

Back sleepers need a medium to firm mattress for pressure relief in the shoulders and hips and enhanced support to the lower back.

Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping is the least common and unhealthiest sleep position because of the high amount of pressure it puts on the spine. Stomach sleepers have a greater risk of neck strain (twisting the head to the side to breathe) and back pain (gravity pulling their weight down, forcing the natural spinal curve to straighten).

We recommend switching to the side sleeping position, but for those committed stomach sleepers, a medium to firm mattress is the best choice. The firmer feel keeps the body resting on top of the bed without deep sinking which could misalign the spine.

Combination Sleeping

Combination sleepers (also known as restless sleepers) toss and turn regularly, switching between 2 to 3 sleep positions each night. Combination sleepers have all the benefits of each sleep position, including better breathing, less pressure on organs, and natural spinal alignment. However, they also get the drawbacks, like the risk of sleep apnea, neck strain, and back pain. A mattress with a medium to medium-firm feel is the best option to adequately support the body in each sleep position and to relieve pressure points.

Price

Before you start your mattress search, set a budget based on the mattress type you’re looking for. Prices range between $500 to over $4000, but you can find a high-quality, queen size mattress for $1200.

Try to avoid a mattress priced lower than $300— these beds may be made with low-quality materials and have a higher risk of sagging within 1 to 2 years. It may seem like you’re saving money at first, but you’ll end up spending more money to replace it sooner. Spending those extra bucks may be worth it for a comfortable and supportive mattress that lasts 7 to 9 years.

Verified Customer Reviews

Since on Amazon you’re not shopping directly on the mattress seller’s website, you may worry about finding information about a potential mattress through Amazon. Read through the information provided, and take a look at the Q&A section— customers can ask questions about a potential mattress and receive answers from fellow buyers and the company. Questions include:

  • Does it have a strong smell?
  • Can you use it on an adjustable bed?
  • Does it come with a box spring?

Another place to look is the reviews from verified customers. They offer first-hand accounts of their experience with the mattress and will give you a better picture of what to expect, both the good and the bad.

Sleep Accessories

Adding sleep accessories, like a frame, foundation, and a mattress protector ensures the mattress lasts and performs at its best.

Frames and Foundations

Make sure a potential mattress will fit your current bed frame before buying. Also, make sure the type of mattress you buy is compatible with your current bed frame or the new one you have your eyes on. The right frame or foundation prevents premature sagging and ensures the mattress performs at its best.

Mattress Protector

A mattress protector is a great, low-cost bedding accessory essential for every mattress. Mattress protectors protect both the mattress and its warranty, and may even extend the bed’s lifespan. Mattress warranties become void in light of any water damage— mattress protectors prevent that from happening and also shield the bed from other stains and spills. These handy bedding options are easy to clean and can save you money otherwise spent on a new mattress.

Sleep Trials, Warranties, and Return Policies

Perks like sleep trials, warranties, and return policies reassure the customer of a quality purchase that’s built to last.

Sleep Trial

A sleep trial is an at-home trial period where customers are given time to try out a new mattress without pressure from a salesman. Sleep trials last between 90 to 120 nights, depending on the brand.

Warranty

A warranty protects the mattress from manufacturing defects and sagging greater than 1 inch, depending on the brand. Most mattresses come with a standard 10-year warranty and only applies to the original purchaser.

Return Policy

Unless mentioned, a mattress on Amazon may not include a sleep trial, but it will have Amazon’s 30-day return policy. Return policies are the next best thing to look for if a mattress doesn’t include a sleep trial. 30 days is about the same time it takes for the body to adjust to a new sleep surface.
